Transportation in Poland

Most Polish cities have well-developed networks of public transport. Depending on the city and region, they include buses, trams, trolleybuses, trains, and metro.

The most common mode of transportation is bus and tram inside the city (metro in case of Warsaw), and bus and trains between cities or inside of a metropoly.

Silesia region - home to the main campus of WSB University - is a metropoly, hence being able to use all three modes of transport is highly recommended. Especially for students living outside of Dabrowa Gornicza.

  • Bus, tram and trolleybuses

The most commonly used mode of transportation across Poland. Most cities have these three organised under one provider which makes the purchase of tickets far easier.
In Silesia the responsible entity is ZTM.
The are several offices situated all over the Metropoly with some of the main ones being:

    • plac Szewczyka 2 Dworzec PKP, 40-098 Katowice
    • Pocztowa 10, 40-002 Katowice

All information about the lines, their schedule and destination one can find on the official website here:
    https://www.metropoliaztm.pl/en/

For all of our students we recommend buying a monthly pass in one of the customers centers of ZTM.

How to buy a monthly pass for bus/tram/train?

If you want to buy the students pass firstly make sure that you have your student ID card and that it has a valid sticker on its back. Without the official sticker from the University your student card is not active and in such you are not eligible for the discount and will have to pay the full price for the ticket. Don't forget to always carry your student ID with yourself!

The other document you will need is your international passport and a valid travel permit (Visa, Residence Permit, etc.)
In the ZTM office most of the employees speak English and such you should not have any trouble with communication.
Kindly inquire about the card and choose from such options as: bus, tram, bus and tram joined, and so on. Do not forget to mention about your student status! Afterwards, follow the instructions given by the staff. You will be notified on where and when you can pick up the prepared card and how to use it.
Important: Your pass should cover 3+ cities for your convenience.

  • Trains

Katowice, together with 40 nearby cities and municipalities, is part of The Metropolitan Association of Upper Silesia and the Dąbrowa Basin, also called Silesian Metropolis. The connection in the Metropoly is well developed and in some cases it's even possible to travel via train to a different part of the city, just like with trams or busses.

In order to travel inside of the Silesian region we recommend using Kolejne Śląskie - Silesian Railways.
The tickets can be found and bought here:
    https://bilet.kolejeslaskie.com/bilet_relacja.jsp

    Or via applications like:
    SkyCash
    KOLEO

The main office is situated in:
    ul. Raciborska 58, 40-074 Katowice

The price of the tickets depends on the distance.

    PKP
Trains that travel between the regions (i.e. Katowice - Warsaw) are mostly operated by PKP InterCity. However other providers can be found as well.
Their website and tickets can be found here:
